Program

Is ar scath a cheile a mhaireann na daoine’. It is in the shelter of each other that the people live. (Gaelic proverb)

Hospitality is a central practice of the Iona Community, in its centres but also in the lives of members who open their homes to others, offer sanctuary and accept hospitality from others, often people of other cultures and faiths. It is an attitude of the heart, living open to life. But it is more than that. ‘The rejoicing of a private and exclusive community fails to invite all to hope. That is not the gospel… For God, no one is stranger. We cannot love our neighbours unless we are open to being loved by our neighbours. We cannot extend hospitality to strangers unless we accept hospitality from strangers. The gospel upholds this two – way traffic. One – way traffic breeds self – righteousness.’

Hospitality is also about the earth, our common home. What does it mean to honour the earth? This is about the food we eat and how it is produced; it is also about our energy use, our mobility, our consumption, our resource use.

This retreat will encourage reflection on the implications of sustainability, inclusion and mutual accountability as they impact on our commitment to hospitality.
